A place at the table explores the effects of hunger on three poverty stricken Families. The documentary opens with a family of seven living in Collbran Colorado and it focuses on Rosey, a fifth grader who struggles in class due to a lack of a healthy diet. The documentary aims to disassociate the idea of starvation with “A skinny under nourished human being,” (A place at the table). The film showed a reporter who stated that “A survey from the USDA reports one in six Americans say they don’t have enough to eat,”
The film then center’s on Barbie Izquierdo A single mother who shared her experience with food insecurity, as well as spoke about her Six year old son, Aiden’s immune deficiency due to lack of good nutrition. Aiden also suffers with hearing loss, and speech delay. “Any kind of nutrition deprivation however short that it could be in those first three years of life can have lifelong consequences for a child (A place at the Table).
In a later scene, Tremonica is introduced. Tremonica is a second grader from Mississippi Delta who struggles with asthma and other health issues. It is stated that there is a connection between starvation and obesity both are a result of insufficient funds to command food that you need to stay healthy. The documentary also examines the percentage of fresh fruit and vegetables that has gone up while the price of processed foods has gone down drastically. Which they say causes poverty stricken families to purchase the least expensive food items.
